DURHAM STREET, UNITED KINGDOM, October 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Cast from Clay, the policy communications consultancy behind Policy Unstuck, has published an interview with Mark Drakeford, former First Minister of Wales.

Conducted by Cast from Clay CEO Tom Hashemi, the interview explores what makes a policy proposal persuasive to the government, drawing on Drakeford’s experiences in ministerial office, including his time as first minister.

Drakeford reflects on the resistance new ideas meet within government. In his view, the status quo exerts a strong pull on the system.Attempts to sidestep opposing arguments leave change vulnerable to inertia. He believes opposing arguments should be met head-on , and identifies election manifestos as providing the democratic mandate to which the system responds.

The interview’s title, “Stop telling ministers you’ll save them money”, draws on his time as health minister, when those meeting him frequently argued that their proposals would save millions of pounds. Drakeford explains that these were not cashable savings, since any hospital beds freed up were filled by other patients who needed them. He cautions that a pitch built on an invalid premise “undermines everything else you say”.

The conversation also touches on how organisations can prepare to influence policy. Drakeford recommends testing arguments with sceptical audiences before approaching a minister, citing the example of an organisation seeking more funding for diabetes first pitching the idea to the Stroke Association, whose role is to argue for stroke services—and so naturally disinclined to support further funding for diabetes. He outlines how to prepare for a productive ministerial meeting: three key points the minister should know, supporting material that can be considered later, and a specific ‘ask’ at the end. In his experience, meetings go well when participants approach them on the basis that everyone is well motivated, and that ministers are not treated as an enemy to be beaten.

Policy Unstuck publishes weekly analysis on political strategy, government communications, and policy influence for public affairs and policy professionals. The views expressed in each interview are those of the interviewee and do not necessarily represent the views of Cast from Clay.
