Lowering U.S. and NC Flags to Half-Staff in Honor of Gloria Steinem

Governor Josh Stein has ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be flown at half-staff from sunrise on September 6, 2026, through sunset on September 10, 2026, in honor of American journalist and social movement activist Gloria Steinem. Steinem died Wednesday at her home in New York City; she was 92.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem was a nationally recognized leader of women's rights. She was a columnist for New York magazine and co-founded Ms. magazine. She also co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus and Women's Action Alliance and helped to establish the Take Our Daughters to Work Day.
