U.S. House Democrats Vow to Block GOP Budget Bill

(MENAFN) House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced Monday that every House Democrat would line up in firm opposition to the Republican budget reconciliation package set for a vote this week, drawing a sharp battle line over federal spending priorities.

"House Democrats are going to continue to fight to drive down the high cost of living and push back against the Republican efforts to make life more expensive," Jeffries told reporters.

The New York Democrat trained his fire on what he characterised as a bloated allocation of taxpayer funds toward immigration enforcement, arguing the money would be far better spent easing the financial burden on American families.

"We believe that taxpayer dollars should be used to make life more affordable for the American people, not give ICE another 70 billion dollar blank check so they can unleash brutality on American citizens and violently target law-abiding immigrant communities," he said.

The legislation in question cleared the US Senate last week, authorising $69.5 billion to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and border security operations through 2029 before being forwarded to the House for a final vote.

Jeffries left no room for ambiguity regarding where his caucus stands.

"House Democrats will be a hard no on the reckless Republican budget reconciliation bill this week," he said.
